When I was a junior in high school, I decided that what I wanted to do with my life was to make the world better than it would have otherwise been.
This raised the question, “What is ‘better’?”
I have been trying to answer that question ever since -- through 12 years of college, and to the present day.
This site presents my account of the ideas that I have explored along the way, and presents “desire utilitarianism” -- the position that I argue makes the most sense.
I have to confess that I did not create this site. Others, particularly James Lazarus and Marty Mapes, took it upon themselves to create a site where my writings could be posted, and offered the results of their efforts for me to use. James Lazarus performed the logistical work, while Marty Mapes designed the site and put everything together. I am not only grateful for their efforts, but honored and flattered as well.
A Better Place: Selected Essays in Desire Utilitarianism
I have placed a set of essays concerning the desire utilitarian theory that I use at this site and in my blog into a book that you can purchase. A description of the book, and a link to the site where you can purchase a copy, can be found on my posting, "A Better Place: Selected Essays in Desire Utilitarianism"
